208 Civics & U.S. History

1st Part: Questions: What were the two sides fighting during the Civil War (hint: not just cardinal points)? Who were the two presidents? How, where and when did the Civil War start (which attack lead to the Civil War)? Who won the Civil War? When did the Civil War end?

2nd Part: The Emancipation Proclamation only abolished slavery in the South. According to the book Undying Glory, why didn't the Emancipation Proclamation abolished slavery in both sides of the Civil War? Do you agree or disagree with Lincoln's decision? Why?

3rd Part: The 54th Regiment came from all over the United States, Canada and the West Indies. Most enlisted black men were never slaves. Yet, they chose to join the 54th even though they faced the Jefferson Davis Proclamation that could enslave or kill them, the possibility of dying and leaving their families powerless and bankrupt, and much racism and segregation in the North, including the horrific New York riots. If you were a free black man during the Civil War would you have joined the Civil War? Why or why not?

  1. This Question is due by next Thursday.

  2. Each part must be between one and two paragraphs

  3. A paragraph must have at least five complete sentences

  4. Use a word processor first.

U.S.A and C.S.A, the South and the North those were the two sides fighting. Jefferson Davis and Abrahan Lincoln were the two presidents.the fight start in South Carolina, on April 12,1861. Because the South attacked the Sumter. the north won the civil war, and the civil war ends in the 1865.

part2:

the emancipation proclamation abolished slavery because Abrahan Lincoln was afraid that the bored states became part of the South. evidence from the book."Lincoln had earlier considered issuing a proclamation freeing the slavery, but had rejected the idea because he was "afraid that half of the officers would fling down their arms and three more states would rise(rebel)". So that's why the emancipation proclamation abolished slavery.

part3:

If i were a black man during the civil war, yes I would choose to joined the civil war because there was a lot of men that risk there life's the slavery ends, and wouldn't like some one to be hurting me or wiping me every time they want. And i would never like someone to tell me what i have to do and when i have to do it. So that's why I would joined if i were a black man during the civil war.

The Emancipation Proclamation didn’t abolished slavery in both sides of the country because Lincoln was afraid that the states with slavery get in fight with the North and then get separate from them. In my opinion I disagree with Lincoln decision because he wasn’t fair.
Part three:
In my opinion if I was black and I’ve never being a slave I would join the Civil War for many reasons. First of all, I would join the Civil War because even that I was not a slave there was segregation and always white people will have better. Secondly, because maybe they thought that it will be worse if the state with more slavery will go. In conclusion, I would join the Civil War for these reasons.

The Civil War started on April 12th, 1861. They fought because the South attacked Fort Sumter. The side that won the Civil War was north that was the Union. The Civil War ended in the year 1865.
Second part:
They only abolished slavery in the South because President Lincoln was afraid that the states that had slaves can come against him. In my opinion I disagree because he has to do what he wants not what other people want and also he is the president and people have to accept what he says and what he commands.
Third part:
In my opinion I will have join the Civil War. First of all, I will go fight because I want to fight for the other slaves so they can become free. Another reason of why I would have join the war is because I will like to fight for the others and I will feel proud of myself. Finally, is because if I was a free black man then I would not have friends because all of them are slaves so I will fight for them. In conclusion, this is why I will have joined the war.

German,

1. Do no abbreviate USA and CSA.
2. Civil War and any other war names are proper nouns and must be capitalized. Emancipation Proclamation is also a proper noun.
3. You never explain in part 2 whether you agreed or disagreed with Lincon's decision.
4. The last part is your strongest, but do not forget that I (yo) is always capitalized.
5. Answer bullet 3 for a better grade!

Part:2

They didn't abolished slavery in the South because Abrahan Lincoln afraid that the other state that had slaves will not a gree with his opinion and eill come against him. In my opinion I desagree with president Abraham Lincoln because he wasn;t fair he did'nt do what he wanted to do he thought about others decison and also because in stead of people liste to him he listen to the people and he is the president.

Part:3

In my opinion if I were a free a free black man during the civil war i would join the civil war. There's many raesons why I would join the civil war. first reason why I would join the civil war is so all slave would become free and also because they were not born to work for free for other people that are humans just like them. Second reason why I would join the civil war is because I know that if I would it be a slave someone who would be free will think something good to do because they will think that if they would be slave they will like someone to help them so they would do things good so other do things good for them. Last reason is why I would join the the civil war is because if the slave are just people that are just workin for other people for free not because their mean they should be like everyone else free because they are humans like everyone and they should not be treated like the way they were treated beccause they are humans like everyone else.

Genesis Coronado,

Please be more careful with the order of words. You listed the Nort first than the South. Yet, than you list Copnfederacy than Union and Lincoln than Davis. It could be read as Licoln as the Confederacy president and the confederacy was located in the North (which I we know is not true). Get it? Let's talk on Monday.

Now, why do you think the Emancipation Proclamation wasn't fair? Explain it to me!

Diane,

1. Avoid using the pronoun they! Who are they?
2. You said that you disagree with Lincoln. But than you said "because he has to do what he wants not what other people want and also he is the president and people have to accept what he says and what he commands". THIS QUOTE AGREES WITH LINCOLN'S EMANCIPATION PROCLAMATION. I AM CONFUSED?
3. You would always agree with the president's decision, so why do you claim so much that you "hate" President Bush. "People have to accept what he says and what he commands"! I don't think you agree with that! What ever happened to freedom of petition?
4. Avoid using the pronoun others. Who are the other?

I disagree with Lincoln because It wouldn't be fair to one part of the country to be save against slavery and the other part to continue with slavery.

If I were a black man during the civil war I would enjoy because I wouldn't like my people to live as a slave because I can suffer seeing my people been use for free and not been treated equal. The purpose of enjoy will just help my people live better.

Nicole,

1. You forgot to to tell me what Confederacy attack lead to the start of the Civil War.
2. Good explanation for part 2. Use a word processor next time and avoid using the pronoun they.
3. The third part is a little messy (capitalize proper nouns such as the Civil War, silly spelling mistakes and some repetitions). What I like is how you stuck with joining for the greater good. It wasn't an easy decision... many 54th Regiment black soldiers died in battle or were hanged or sold into slavery when they were captured! Bravery has a high cost!

Mr. PPD

Mr. Pitts-Dilley said...

Fedilayne,

1st Part: You forgot to tell me what attack by the Confederacy over the Union started the Civil Wat.
2nd Part: The Emancipation Proclamation such as the Declaration of Independence are proper nouns. You must capitalize proper nouns. You need to do this part again. The 13th Amendment abolished slavery in the entire country, not the Emancipation Proclamation. You didn't state why the Emancipation Proclamation only abolished slavery in the Confederate states (the book and German talked about this). Also, your disagrement with Lincoln needs a better explanation.
3. The last part is a little short, but technically the best. But please remember that all wars are proper nouns and must be capitalized!

Mr. PPD

Remember,

Do the second part again... check your grade online!

CIVIL WAR

FIRST PART: there were two sides fighting during the war, those were CONFEDERACY (south), and the UNION (north). The real names were: CONFEDERATES STATES OF AMERICA, and THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. The President of the Confederates States of America was Jefferson Davis. Abraham Lincoln was the President of the United States of America. The civil war started on April 12, 1861 because the south attacked the Sumter fort in South Carolina. This was the issue that made the war explode. In 1865 the war ended with the UNION as winner of the Civil War.

SECOND PART: according to the book Undying Glory the Emancipation Proclamation only abolished slavery in the south because Lincoln was worried about what could happen if this law would have affected the border states as the book says, “Lincoln had earlier considered issuing a Proclamation freeing the slaves, but had rejected the idea because he was afraid that half of the officers would fling down their arms and three more states would rise (rebel).” This means that Lincoln did not applied the law for Border States because of his scare of lose the war against the Confederacy. In another way I agree with Lincoln because that was a big risk of lose the war if the border states became rebel.

THIRD PART: I would joined the civil war because as many of those black soldiers I would have liked that the slavery would end the fastest possible and if I would have to give my life to can make free my family or my people I would give it, I would have die in peace because I would know I die for I good reason. Moreover freedom is a right that everyone has and it deserves to be respected

Part 1:

The two sides during the Civil War were the Union from the North and the Confederacy from the South. The two Presidents of each side were Jefferson Davis and Abraham Lincoln. The Civil War started in the Fort Sumter when the Union was fighting against the Confederacy to abolish slavery. The Civil War began on April 12, 1861. The side who won the Civil War was the North and because of that the South was obligated to free all the slaves. The reason of why the Union and Confederacy began to fight was because the South attacked the Fort Sumter. Finally the war ended in 1865.

Part 2:

The Emancipation Proclamation didn’t abolish slavery in both sides because Abraham Lincoln was afraid because if he abolishes the slavery in the two sides then the people could get mad and move to the Confederacy. Other reason was that there were Border States and then they could join to the confederacy too. In my opinion I agree with Lincoln decision because it is good to do things by part and not quickly and all together. Lincoln was right because if he abolishes the slavery in all the country then the people could get mad at him.

Part 3:

In my opinion I would have join to the Civil War because the other slaves have the right to be free. If I had had the power to fight to free slaves I would do it because if I am and ex-slaves I know what being a slave feel like and I wouldn’t want them to feel like that. If I would have join to the Army to fight for the slaves’ right I would give my life to them to be free. But besides that, I just only wouldn’t fight for them; I would help them to find a better job far away from segregation and discrimination. Those slaves work so hard and the whites just pay them a few dollars and the slaves really need the money because they have a family and sometimes the slaves have children that they have to support with money. Above all that , if I had join to the Army to fight for the slaves’ right I would make white people respect the black people and I would make them integrate with all the blacks people.

1st: The two sides that were fighting on the Civil War were the south (confederacy states) and the north (Union States). These two sides had to be control by someone, the person the control the south was Jefferson Davis. The person the control the north was Abraham Lincoln. This whole war starts with the south attacking the north in Fort Sumter, when the north was in a celebration. The war ended in 1865, and for the good luck and blessing of the north won

2nd: According to Emancipation Proclamation Abraham Lincoln only wanted to ended slavery on the south, but everyone ask why he did the proclamation just to end slavery on the south, not in both sides, North and South. Lincoln went into all this trouble because he was afraid the all the borders states (States with slavery in the north) like Delaware, Maryland, Kentucky, Missouri, and Virginia would become part of the south at the war, and if the borders states became part of the south, they would lost the war with no doubt. And this country wouldn’t be what it is today. I agree with what Lincoln did on this problem because if Lincoln would do both sides, the north had a change to lose because they were already losing when Lincoln wrote this proclamation and imagine already losing and the borders states going to the south that’s a pretty bad combination on a war. So without the proclamation they would be no United States and maybe Latinos and blacks wouldn’t be here, some of them would be free but maybe the Caribbean countries would be part of the Confederacy States and all of them would be slaves too. So the United Sates has to thanks Lincoln for thinking of this and making a good decision.

3rd: If I was a free black man on those times, I would join the army just to protect the rights of others. It was rare to see a black free man with the rights like a white person, that why I would join the north, to see black people maybe after the war with some right that could make them happy and hard worker for something they love. Any way, I had always been a fair man with equal rights, so why can just other people like me have the same experience that I been having, that is not being fair, so I would fight for the future and other people.

During the civil war in the 1861s the two sides were fighting. The two sides were the south confederacy and the north United States. Therefore the civil war was guide by two presidents. The presidents were Jefferson Davis and Abraham Lincoln. The civil war was started by the north attack the fort Sumter, consequently this happen in 1861. During this war the north wins. (UNION)

Part 2:
I’m agree with Lincoln‘s decision because they are borders states. Consequently other reason is because Lincoln was scared that the people that were in the south can cross to the north.

If I were free black men during the civil war I would have joined the civil war because I have to fight for the freedom of my siblings. In other words, I will fight for my people and my race. The reason is because no fear that if I have the freedom why I cannot help the other people.

First part:
The Civil War was one of the most important wars in the United States. The Civil War was between the North and the South, the Union and the Confederacy. During the civil war the two presidents were Abraham Lincoln and Jefferson Davis. The Civil War began in South Carolina in April 12th, 1861 because the south attacked Fort Sumter. The North (Union) was the side that won the Civil War.
Second part:
The Emancipation Proclamation only abolished in the South because Abraham Lincoln was afraid that the Border States get together with the Confederacy. Also what could happen if those sates get together with the Confederacy they could have won the Civil War. In my opinion I agree with Lincoln decision because he doesn’t want to lose the Civil War, and if those states had moved to the South there was a probability that we will not be here today.
Third part:
If I was a free black men I would not have join the Civil War for so many reasons. First of all, I wouldn’t have joined the Civil War because I will not risk my life and let my family alone. Secondly, I would not have joined the Civil War knowing that I would not have the equal rights as white troops, that we would not have the same pay and the same uniforms, they will be better than us always. In conclusion, these are the reasons of why if I was a free slave I would not have joined the Civil War.

Part:1
The two sides fighting the civil war are called north united State of America Union and south confederate sates of America Confederacy. The two President of each sides were Abraham Lincoln and Jefferson Davis and on April,12,1816 the Civil war started because the south attacked the Sumter fort in South Carolina. The side who won the civil war was North (UNION).And Finally, the civil war end in 1865.

Part:2
The Emancipation Proclamation only abolished slavery in the South because Abraham Lincoln was afraid that all border states*From the North* Such as , Kentucky, Delaware, Maryland, Missouri, and Virginia was going to unite with the south at the war and if the border go with the south the north would lose the war and as I know they were already losing so if the border unite with the south today we were not be here and the only options was to only abolished slavery in the south. I agree with Abraham Lincoln because if he abolished the north and south the north was going to lose and this country was not going to be a united it would be with slavery and racism and race separate and I know that it was not fair for those who were slave in the north but it was a good decision for the future.

Part :3
If I was a black man during the civil war I would have joined the civil war for many reasons. First of all, If I would be a free black men I wouldn’t be calm knowing that white people don’t treat black (colored) people equal. Although, I was a free men it doesn’t mean that I was going to be treated such as white people. Meanwhile, there was going to be a lot of racism and the would bother me, nevertheless if I joined the civil war I would show that black have the same ability as white people have and that would abolished racism. Secondly, Showing what black can do is part of help my own race because if I’m black and free why others with my race have to be salve? I would joined the civil war to abolished slavery and black were the only one who can help because they represent their race and in the time of period the only thing that matter is what race was you and if a black free men is joining the civil war is representing the black people especially slaves it showing that black can do anything that white can. Finally, I would joined the civil war to help my own race, to abolish racism and to be treated equally and by the I would be proud of what I did for my own race and I would considered my self a brave person because joining the civil war was a risk of been salve or be killed but if the happen everyone would be concern that I was fighting to defend and help black and salves and If I would be salve I would know that I try for it. To conclude, if I was a free black men I would joined the civil war.

Paloma,

1) We need to be able to spell the name of this country correctly and to capitalize proper nouns such as Confederate States of America. It is not Sumter Fort, it is Fort Sumter.
2) Virginia was a Confederate state. West Virginia was a Border state. All Border States belonged to the Union! The last part is a little confusing. It seems like you might have waited for the last possible minute and rushed through the entire assignment!
3) the last part is your best work, but remember that Civil War and all other wars are proper nouns and must be capitalized and it is "if I were (use were for hypothetical)
