8th Grade Civics & U.S. History: Why do Civics and Social Studies Matter?

Amendments:

Background:

Illegal or undocumented immigrant students have a much harder time getting and paying for college. In states like Massachusetts, Arizona, Colorado, Georgia and Oklahoma undocumented students have to pay out of state tuition for state schools. An in-state student has to pay $11,732 for tuition at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst (one of the best state schools in the country, plus $8,276 for room and board), but an out-of-state student has to pay $23,229 for tuition (plus $8,276 for room and board).

Many states like Georgia do not allow undocumented immigrants to receive state scholarships and certain student loans. States like South Carolina do not allow undocumented students to even attend state universities.

Your assignment is to write a letter to President Obama asking him to support or not (it is up to you) the passage of this act into law.

You must give at least 3 reasons and clearly defend these 3 reasons. You are expected to use what you learned in civics class to defend your position.

This assignment is due by Wednesday June 10th at 8:30 AM.

Use Microsoft Word or another word processor to help your work and remember that President Obama does not speak Spanish!

Dear Barack Obama you know that the country is a situation that many people don’t has work I feel very consents about that I know that many immigrants’ students don’t go to college for their economic system I want that when go to college I has the possibility to pay all my materials, we have rights to pay the same that the citizen and other students pay go to college. I knew that the state of Massachusetts, Arizona, Colorado, Georgia, and Oklahoma undocumented students have to pay out of state tuition for state schools. An in-state student has to pay $11,732 for tuition at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst one of the best state schools in the country, plus $8,276 for room and board, but an out-of-state student has to pay $23,229 for tuition (plus $8,276 for room and board. I think that we have the rights to pay the same and this country has many students that have fewer resources go to college.
I know that we have many responsibility and duties to do in this live and one of this responsibility is learn of our errors, one of our duties is work hard in our life to has a good future explain read, write, and wrote .I think that you can do a low that the immigrants pay the same to the other in all college no matter in what state is, but in all states’ college should have to pay the same.
I have three reasons my first reason is the younger girls and boys that not has the resources go to college and began to work in McDonald or Burger King .the second reason don’t go to college because they are undocumented and live of high school and began to work carry of boxes in a market, and the third and last is the people that go to college and but not fish because They cannot continue paying their economic is back and the money only is to pay their house or food.
Thanks and, I wish that this day we have this law that we all could have the opportunity to go to the university and fish and pay reduction sale and all the same no matter and state we go but we go to pay the same.

Sincerely: Beatrice Bodre

Dear:Barack Obama

I'm going to write this letter to you because i wanted to express that i think that all students undocuments have to pay the same quantity of money that the other students with documents because they have the same veneficts.

my first reason:is because all the undocuments students have the same right of the educaction to adapt the laws of this country.

second reason:is because this country have the same equality for all the people.

third reason:is because they lear a profession for to practice inside the country.

So the economy is too bad if they don't get to college what they want do in the future.

Thanks for listen to me
Have a great day

Bye,Bye

Dear:
Barack Obama

Hi Mr.President Obama is a pleasure to talk with you across this lines. My name is Brankely Garcia. I am 14 years old. I attend to to the Curley k-8 school in Boston M.A., Jamaica Plain. I am in 8 grade and I am Latin or latina from Dominican Republic.

I want to talk with you about at least three reasons of the undocumented or ilegal immigrants. The first reason that I want to talk with you about the undocumented immigrants is that in the U.S. in the past ussually immigants, undocumeted immigrants, black people, white people and more peoplehad work or jobs, but now there are little work or jobs for the people.I think that the white people had more possibility to had works than the undocumented immigrants or immigrant people or if the aiens had work ussually they would in hotel cleaning rooms and also they pay a little amount of money.I don't know where the money is going, but I have an idea that all the money that we needed is going to the Senators or Representatives that the goverment is paying they much more money than the people that are working in regular woks and the goverment is paying they much money only because the are superiors than the people and I accept that they protect our country, but thay are people equal than us for that I want you Mr.President Obama to that you do someting to that the people could had more jobs or that the goverment pay almost the equal sum of money of everyone. The second reason that I want to talk with you about the immigration of the undocumented immigrants that the aliens that past four yearsor more in the U.S. they could learn English without paying money or paying a little portion of money and then they will take a exam and if they pass the exam they will become citizens of the U.S. for that I want you Mr.President Obama to think in that condition and make it real and you said that you will make it real, but I think that you forgotted that reason and I think that you win that election and make yourself president because some people are trusting in to make that American Dream real. The third and final reason that I want to talk with you is about the undocumented students of Massachussets,Arizona,Colorado,Georgia and OklahomaI knew that in the public schools:Elementary to High schools you get you education free, but when you get to College for examples if you are citizen of U.S. you pay $12,000 for year plus $9,000 for room and board, but if if you are an undocument immigrant you had to pay $24,000 for each year plus $9,000 for room and board. And I start to think this is not fair because we all are people of meat and bone that has 2 legs,2 arms,1 head and 1 body and what is the matter with the immigrant people because we have the freedom of speech, religion, assembly, petition and press and why we all had the same rights and freedoms and we don't had that equal paying about the College this is not fair because we the Latin people came to this country to had our American Dream and we can because nobody is going to stop us. In that point you could see the different about both;citizens and undocumented imimgrants I think that you can see the different and the racism and descrimination of aliens for that this three reasons I writte to you this letter Mr.Obama because I think if you put more jobs, make the undocumented immigrants take a test and become citizen and put the same value of paying to the students of College you will make the Word a better and Happy Word. Now that you know my three reasons to make the Word much better and Happy so thank for read my letter and we the Latin people are trusting in you to make a big and good different about us and the Word.
Bye, Bye!!!!!
Sincerely:
Brankely Garcia..

Breatice,

It has been a please to have known you for 2 years. You are make lots of progress in all subjects and in learning English. Your letter is very inspiring, although your conclusion needed more work. Keep it up and let's hope that Obama asks both houses of Congress to pass this law.

Mr. PPD

P.S. It should have had more things that we have learned in class such as the Bill of Rights.

Mr. Pitts-Dilley said...

Nirorkis,

Very good points and logic. If the economy is bad and these students can't go to college, what will they do? Great question, but you could have written more and taken more time. You will need to keep working harder so you can achieve your own dreams.

It has been a pleasure to have you as a student.

Dear Barack Obama:
In this letter I would like to tell my Reasons for the Dream Act to pass a law.

One of my Reason is because most of us living in United States are illegal and some of these young people are looking for a better future for their lives, a better career, a better study, a better place to live. Students apply to their studies are one of the best but unfortunately the move from High School do not have the resources to pay for college and can not enter.

Another Reason is that the illegal students can not receive scholarships even if they are the best students, but just because they are immigrants can not get scholarships.

Another of my Reason is that these students can not be used to advance what they want most to achieve like a good career, a good academic recognition, or might even achieve something that nobody could have done it before, and they are being denied the opportunity to be someone in life or be part of our new future.

These are my Reasons for which I would like to pass the Dream Act to a law which can benefiting many people.

Brankely,

There are some things that you need to work in the writing, but I have never seen someone improve as fast as you. You are an amazing young lady and lots of potential! The sky is the limit and no grade that I can give you would match what you deserve. Keep working hard and hopefully Obama will "make the American Dream real"!

Mr. PPD

Dear: Barack Obama.

I'm writing you this letter to tell you that i respecfull desagree with the law what congress made, who they make enducument people pay the more taxes and more money that the american citizen should pay.

People have the right to made their own carear and story how much they can, they should give the permicion to enducument people to have the same right then the american citizen.

At least they work hard to make their own carear to became what they wanted to be.

Some people dont respect the right of others, and for me that's racist.

Again with all my respect i ask to you just that to give that right for that kind of people.

here i take leave.
bye,bye.

Dear:Barack Obama they have to pay the same money because the economy is to bad and sometimes they have problem found a work because some people ask about document and they have that get the worst and strong for less money.Work like get garbage in the street and they sacrifice themselves and to do all that to make theirs dreams real and their dreams are to go college,to be realized, and to study the profession that always they wanted.

Dear President Barack Obama :

I wrote to you this letter to tell you that to me is unfair that undocumented students are paying more money than the rest of the population that lives in the Unite States , there is a difference between people that lives here and people that comes from others countries to study , if you live here and you want to study here is because they want to exert their professions here in the Unite States but the foreign students comes here just to study then they are going to go back to their countries because when you get your diploma as a foreign student that diploma does not work here and if the undocumented students are paying more is because their are studding like foreign students ; a way to prevent this is giving vecas to the student that do well because if they bare going to college is because they are smart are they deserve get a good education even they do not have documents.

I hope you will can change this law.
Sincerely:
Gabriela Cortés

Gabriela,

Vecas are scholarships. Now, I am not sure you gave me three reasons of why Obama should support this bill. It seems that you got stuck between the difference of foreign students and undocumented or "illegal" immigrant students.

Mr. PPD

P.S. You need to work to your full potential!
