Subject: Welcome Letter

I would like to welcome you to the Curley K-8. My name is Mr. Pitts-Dilley and I am your children’s history, Civics and geography teacher. Unfortunately, about three years ago 50% of students who finished middle school in Boston Public Schools failed their first year of high school (9th grade). Of those students who failed 9th grade, about half failed again. These students failed, because they left middle school unprepared. My goal is not only to make sure that your children learn history, civics and geography, but that they leave the Curley K-8 School prepared to succeed in high school and college. Your children will be working extremely hard in my classes. They will be asked to read and write everyday. They will be given homework 5 days a week including vacation.

I cannot prepare your children for success in high school and college alone. I need your help in making sure that your children are doing their homework and participating positively in class so one day they can be professionals such as lawyers, doctors and engineers. I encourage you to check your children’s notebooks regularly. You can check your children’s homework by going to my class blog at http://curleyhistorypage.blogspot.com

I use an Internet program (www.snapgrades.net) that will email you and allow you to check your children’s attendance, missing homework and projects, my specific comments, and exams and each term grade. It will also allow you and your children to print mini-lessons, review sheets and some work sheets. All I need is an email from you. If you do not have Internet at home you can always use the city libraries. I can help you get a free email account. If you do not have an email and Internet at home and you do not have time to go to a public library or a friend’s house, I can print the reports and send it to you.

Boston Public Schools is doing the best it can do to improve and make sure that your children succeed and follow their dreams. However, still nearly 3 of every 10 students who enter Boston Public Schools do not finish High School. We can’t allow your children to fail!

Desafortunadamente, hace aproximadamente tres años 50% de los estudiantes que acabaron el octavo grado en las escuelas públicas de Boston, fallaron su primer año de la escuela secundaria (noveno grado). No puedo preparar a sus niños para el éxito en la escuela secundaria y universidad solamente. Necesito su ayuda en cerciorarse de que sus niños estén haciendo sus tareas y estén participando positivamente en clase así que un día que pueden ser profesionales tales como abogados, doctores e ingenieros. Si usted no tiene Internet en casa usted puede utilizar siempre las bibliotecas de la ciudad. Puedo ayudarle a conseguir una cuenta libre del email. Si usted no tiene un email y el Internet en su casa y usted no tiene tiempo para ir a una biblioteca pública o a la casa de un amigo, puedo imprimir los informes y enviártelos.

Las escuelas públicas de Boston están haciendo el mejor que puede hacer para mejorar y para cerciorarse de que sus niños tienen éxito y siguen sus sueños, ambiciones y metas. Sin embargo, todavía casi 3 de cada 10 estudiantes que entren en las escuelas públicas de Boston no terminan la escuela secundaria (High School). ¡No podemos permitir que sus niños fallen!
