209 World Geography

1st Part: What causes monsoons? You must explain the orographic effect and rain shadow effect in your own words.

2nd Part: Where is Calcutta? What is its population? Why is it called "Dying City". How are monsoons affecting Calcutta?

3rd Part: Pick any city and country of the world that you want and explain how the climate affects the type of housing people build, the clothing people wear and what people do for fun.

Each part must be at least four sentences long. You should type it on a word program first and then copy and paste to the comments section.

All comments are due by Friday, May 16th. There are no other assignments for this week. Good luck with the MCAS! But you guys don't need it!!!

1.what cause monsoons? are strong winds. Ocean water evaporates when is hot .the vapor goes up .As the hot vapor goes up, it get colder, This is called condensation .So it lean on the mountain side. This called orographic effect. On the rains shadow of the mountain does rain a lot.

2.Calcutta is a city in India, where it has poor and rich people. The population of Calcutta is 15million. Calcutta is called dying city because Calcutta is very very poor so people always are dying in the city. The monsoons in Calcutta are the Calcutta can flood easily.

3.Brazil, Rio de Janeiro =], the climate in Brazil is tropical wet, is a wet climate.light clothing, beach, games soccer, never hurricanes or Earthquakes because houses are made out concrete.

1st part:
orographic effect causes monsoons, when the water from the ocean is moist and evaporates that water goes to a mountain that water becomes cold water then this water rains in the rain shadow of the mountain.

2nd part:
Calcutta is in India. The population of Calcutta is a high population in 15 million. is call the "Dying city" because monsoons many people die because of the monsoons and because people are poor. Monsoons are affecting Calcutta by affecting in the summers and by flooding the streets.

3rd part:
Quito: Ecuador.
The climate in Quito affects the type of houses by making the houses be more colder because the houses are made of cement. people in Quito wear sweater when they are in the low areas because is warm but if people are in the high areas some wear coats because is cold. For fun people in Quito play soccer or they go to festivals like the carnaval.

Monsoons are cause by the orographic effect. When the air gets moist because the ocean gets hot this process is call evaporation. As the moist air goes up it gets colder and its condenses, and then when is on top of the mountain it’s comes down as rain this is called precipitation. In the rain shadow it doesn’t rain a lot because all the rain falls on the top of the mountain therefore little rain falls on the rain shadow.

Calcutta is located in India. The population of Calcutta is 15million Calcutta is call the Dying City because its has a lot of monsoons and a lot people die. Monsoons are affecting Calcutta in many ways they are flooding the streets and making farming a problem.

Dominican Republic, Santo Domingo. The climate effect Santo Domingo in many ways, people have to wear clothes that is good for hot weather and rainy weather. The buildings are making from bricks and some of woods and some. To have fun they have to wear clothes that are making for hot weather.

PART #1 what cause monsoon? Strong winds, fast and power full. when the water gets really hot the vapor goes up and up into it gets colder. I the top of the mountain it rain a lot but in the button it doesn’t rain that much its like no rain.

PART #2 Where is Calcutta? Calcutta is a city in Indian. The population is most likely 15 million. And its very poor. It’s called "Dying City" because it’s very poor and in Calcutta many people die because its very very poor. The monsoon is affecting Calcutta because when the monsoon comes the river floods.

PART #3 My country is Puerto Rico and the city is San Juan. The climate is very hot and when it rain it gets cold. The climate some times affect the housing some times because of the rain because when it rain a lot the water start to go inside of the people house but it only goes in the people who live in the first floor. The people wear shorts, not long t-shirts and sandals. Some times the rain fill the streets and it hard to get out the schools. The people in Puerto Rico play fun games like the neighbors and start talking or they go to the park, they fill pools and swim and play games in the water and a lot of kids play with legos.

1st Part What causes monsoons? What causes monsoons is heavy rain
And strong winds. And when the water from the ocean evaporate
Make the strong wind make the monsoons.

2nd Part Where is Calcutta? Calcutta is located in India.
What is its population? The population in Calcutta is 15million.

Why is it called "Dying City" its called the "Dying City" because the
Place is very poor and lot of people in there are dying.
Monsoons are affecting Calcutta because what make monsoons are strong winds
And strong rains so the wind and the rain make the people sick and the get
Lot of sickness and when it rains their lot of flood comes so the people get sick.

3rd Part, bani, Dominican Republic the climate effect
The house in bani Dominican Republic because their houses
Are not very good the houses have aluminum top.and the clothes
The people wear is short and wear clothes the don’t make you hot.
What people do for fun is go to the field and play baseball, go to the river
And beach and go to the pool and they cook out side just for fun at night when
The lights go off people go outside with friends and just play and talk until the light
Comes again.

Frank,

You need to explain why it doesn't rain nearly as much in the rain shadow. YOU HAVEN"T done that yet! Also, I don't understand the last sentence about Santo Domingo. People have fun wearing clothes that are made for hot weather???

Mr. Pitts-Dilley said...

Francys,

You need to explain why it doesn't rain in the rain shadow. Also, how many people live in slums in Calcutta, INDIA (no n at the end)? The last part was excellent! Thanks for sharing about San Juan! I am waiting for your explanations about parts one and two!

PPD

Mr. Pitts-Dilley said...

Hanny,

If your part one was true then we would have Monsoons in every country and city in the world! Look at your notebooks and notes and fix it! It's incomplete!

Part 2 is a bit rushed! How many people live in the slums in Calcutta? Thanks for sharing about Bani. It sounds like rain and maybe poor construction materials might be a problem and that warm weather is a good time! Don't forget to fix part 1 and answer the question on part 2!

PART #1 In the rain shadow it doesn't rain because is in the top on the mountain and some times it does. PART #2 In the calcutta 15million live there.

Mr. Pitts-Dilley said...

Francys,

You did not answer any of my two questions. I will repeat... explain why it doesn't rain in the rain shadow (it only rains a little, why?) and how many people live in the SLUMS in Calcutta, India (there are 15 million people living in Calcutta, but not all of them live in the SLUMS)?

Dominican Republic, Santo Domingo. The climate effect Santo Domingo in many ways, people have to wear clothes that is good for hot weather and rainy weather. The buildings are making from bricks and some of woods, bricks don’t hold heat therefore brick is got for hot weather. To have fun people in Santo Domingo they go out side with no clothes because is too hot.

cutelittlefrancys said...

How many people live in the SLUMS in Calcutta, India? In slum about a third of the people from calcutta live in the slum.

why it doesn't rain in the rain shadow? In the shadow it doesn't rain because its like to parts of the mountainand one side is the said were the indian ocean is and the other side is downwind dry air , its warm and rain shadow will most likely it rain to the indian area but not to the other side.

I know you explain it but ....i try my best...

1st part:the orographic effect and rain shadow effect because the water from the indian ocean evaporate then it goes up.and then the downwinds and then there is dry air and then the rain shadow.

2nd part:How many people live in the slums in Calcutta?5million people live in the slum in calcutta.

1st Part:

Monsoons are caused by the Orographic Effect. The Orographic Effect happens when water gets hot. Then it makes moisture air. This process is called Evaporation. As this moisture air goes up it becomes colder. And it also condenses. Then this moisture air gets to the top of a mountain and it creates a cloud. When the cloud is saturated it rains. This is called precipitation. In the Rain Shadow doesn’t rain a lot because as the air is going up the clouds in the top of the mountain have already throughout all of its heavy rain. This is why it doesn’t rain too much in the Rain Shadow.

2nd Part:

Calcutta is located in India with a population of 15 million people. 1/3 of its population lives in slums which is 5 million. Calcutta is called the “Dying City” because of monsoons. Monsoons cause a lot of rain and that makes flood. This flood kills a lot of people this is why it’s called the “Dying City”. Monsoons are affecting Calcutta by making some of its economy difficult like farming. Is destroying houses. People have to make their houses taller because of floods. Floods also affect Calcutta’s way of transportation. And people will have to wear different type of clothes.

3rd Part:

Dominican Republic, Santo Domingo. Most houses have walls made out of concrete and a metal top. Others are completely built of concrete. Houses are made like this because it rains a lot. And also because most hurricanes are from the Caribbean Sea. People dress mostly with short sleeved shirts, short pant (jeans) and sandles. People dress this way because of the heat. Some wear long sleeved shirt, long pants (jeans) and snickers. People dress this way because they want to protect from the sun. Some of the things people do for fun is people go to the beach to cool off. And they also go to pools.

Sorry for being late =)

1st part: monsoons are caused when the air gets moist the contrary happens to the ocean it gets hot then the heat evaporates the water and that is where the moist air comes from. As the moist air come up the water is condensate in the clouds. Then when it reaches the point of the top of the mountain is a rainfall. That is how the monsoon is caused and in other words that is how the orographic effect works. The rain shadow is called the “Rain Shadow” because in stead of the rainfall coming in the rain shadow the peak of the mountains takes it to Another Places some times causes Monsoons.

2nd part: Calcutta is located in India near the Bay of Bengal. About 15 million people say Calcutta is there home but 1/3 live in the slums. (15/3=5million people). Calcutta is called the dying city because of the river floods and how the people find there houses under water and how many people die. Monsoons are affecting Calcutta because 1st people build there houses on top of bamboo to keep the floods away from there homes it also make farming almost impossible because some times the rain or drags out the seeds from the soil or it over flows the crops of water and rip out the plants from the ground. Most of the people have problems to get from home to work or from work to home because of the overflowed streets.

3rd part: U, S, A Florida the climate effects Florida in many ways 1st people try to build houses that can with stand hurricanes because Florida is very hot peninsula so people do not have to wear coat but they do need maybe rain coats because there is rain there most of the time but it is manly hot. People do many things in Florida for fun 1st some people have many channels with fish and some people just fish. Other people do many things play base ball go crocodiles watching there are many things to do in Florida.

P.S sorry it is late I forgot

part 1: the thig that cause monsoon is the water get hot then when the water get hot is started to evaporate and then air get moist, then the clouds goes up as they go u it started to get cold then it rain.the rain shadow it doesnt raidn because all the rain falled on top of the mountains.

part 2: calcutta is located in india .he population is 5 millions slum.it called the dying city because many people die when te monsoon come. monsoon affect calcutta by flooding the street and by making farming impossilble.

part 3:dominican republic , santo domingo the climate afect dr because if it getting cold the houses are make of "concreto" an it ill get a little cooler because it to hot in dominican republic.they play baseball and they do more thing for funn.

Mr. Pitts-Dilley said...

Kenny,

Your first part is a fantastic explanation! Saturation is the perfect word for this example! Great description of the "dying city" and how Santo Domingo dwellers (people who live there) deal with the weather!

Late but Amazing!

Mr. Pitts-Dilley said...

Jose,

I am a bit confused. Please explain to me why it rains a lote less in the rain shadow. Your second part is right on the dot (perfect)! Now, don't abbreviate United States as USA (keep it as United States). What city in Florida? Your sharing was great, but you do know that Florida is a state and not city right (just being picky)!

I am waiting for the explanation on the lack of precipitation on the rain shadow!

PPD

Mr. Pitts-Dilley said...

Rochelly,

What is the total population in Calcutta? Also, do not abbreviate Domican Republic as DR (keep it as Dominican Republic).

Now, how do Monsoons make farming "impossible" in Calcutta? What crop do farmers grow?

1st part: Monsoons are cause by the orographic effect. When the air gets moist,
Because the ocean is getting hotter (precipitation). The moist air goes up it gets colder (condensation). In the other part of the mountains “shadows” it doesn’t cause monsoon but it still rain.

2nd part: Calcutta is located in India. The population of Calcutta is around 15million people. Calcutta is call the "Dying City "Dying City” because, its has a lot of monsoons and monsoons is affecting Calcutta because, kills lots of people.

3rd part: Dominican Republic, Santo Domingo. The buildings are made of bricks and some of woods and some are made from “sin”. The climate effect Santo Domingo by people has to wear cloths that are good for hot weather and not for cold weather or wear cloths that are good for cold weather and not for hot weather. the people in Dominican Republic, Santo Domingo do for fun is to play Domino, play cards (Spanish:3 y 2), (and many other games the I know how to play it but I don’t know how is call).

Mr. Pitts-Dilley said...

Jean,

When the ocean water gets too hot and becomes vapor is not precipitation, it is called evaporation. Precipitation is when it rains. You need to explain to me why it doesn't rain very much in the rain shadow (you haven't explained to me yet). Also, what are monsoons? Look it up in your notes or in the book!

Give me three exact examples of how monsoons affect the people of Calcutta! Thanks for sharing about Santo Domingo. By "sin" you mean aluminum top!

Waiting for your reply!
